Dear Aunty: Why Am I Living Paycheck to Paycheck When I Make Good Money?

Dear Aunty
On paper, I'm doing fine. I have a good job, and I make more money than my parents ever did. But every month, the money is gone before the next check comes We live paycheck to paycheck, rent, car, groceries, insurance, the kids' activities. I'm not buying anything fancy, and it still isn't enough. Nobody knows. At work, I'm the dependable one. At home, I'm the one who holds it all together. I smile, I say "I'm good," and then I lie awake at 2 a.m. doing math in my head. I'm tired, Aunty. Not just from the money, but from pretending. Some days the pretending is heavier than the bills.
How do I stop feeling like a failure when I'm doing everything I'm supposed to do, and how do I stop pretending I'm okay when I'm not?

Aunty's Response
First of all, sweetheart, let me be clear. What we're experiencing right now, here in these United States and around the world, is a reset, a shift, and a change. And one of the many things a reset, a shift, and a change will do is highlight who you really are.
People sometimes say money makes people corrupt and bad. That is absolutely not true. What I've learned is that money highlights who we are.
So what was it about you that made you feel it was important to overcompensate, to always put yourself last, and to always put on a smile when you were hurting? What was the experience that left you believing it was better to pretend and smile than to be sincere, authentic, and honest?
See, God works through authenticity, honesty, and truth. Every time you cover shit up, every time you cover your hurt, your pain, your disappointment, your agony, the weight of the world sitting on your shoulders, and everything you go to bed with at night, you're doing several things.
Number one, you're forfeiting the opportunity for the people you love to rise to the occasion and be of service to you, no different than you've been to them.
Number two, you're putting yourself in a position to burn out your nervous system at both ends, and that is no help to anyone.
Number three, you're not seeing that you were not built to be a workhorse. You were meant to walk in your divine goodness, guidance, and gifts, and to be of service to whatever your life's purpose is meant to be.
So one of the things I'll tell you right now is to take off the weight of the world. Take that shit off your shoulders. Tap your spouse. Tap your children. Guess what? Children know how to sweep a floor, and a spouse can learn to do the same things you do. So if you're the one sitting up at night, you're going to tap him at two in the morning and tell him you need some company. Two minds put together are better than one.
And when you finish doing that, you're going to allow yourself to sit in the fear. Ask yourself what you have access to right now that you can use to soothe your soul, so you can go back out into the world and be of service to your spouse, your job, and everything else.
See, the nucleus of this, my dear, is you, and everything that's in you and about you. I need you to get closer to the truth of who you really are, and why you feel it's necessary to put on airs for people. Because the truth of the matter is, there is no true happiness without a true sense of self, and there's no true sense of self without a true sense of self-worth.

Collective Soul Tribe Lesson
Soultribe, this letter isn't just one person's story. So many of us are doing everything "right" and still coming up short, and then carrying that weight in silence because we think we're the only ones. You are not the only one. The pretending is what's drowning us, not just the bills. When we hide our struggle, we rob the people who love us of the chance to show up for us, and we rob ourselves of the rest we deserve. This month, I want each of you to set something down. Tell one person the truth. Let someone help you carry it. We were never meant to hold the weight of the world alone. That's what a tribe is for.
My grandmother carried two generations on her back, and I learned that love can hold a family, but only a tribe can lift one. Many hands rise.
Practice: Speak this proverb every morning before your feet hit the floor. Say it three times with intention. Let it remind you before the day begins that everything you are about to think, say, and do is a seed. Choose accordingly.
Speak this in the morning when you rise and at night before you rest. Say it with intention, not just words. Let it shift your mindset and anchor your faith in your own journey.
Affirmation
"I am no longer afraid of drowning, because I have learned how to swim. I am not afraid of my life. I am right at home in it.
So blessed be."
